Emmy-Award winning journalist and documentarian on social change topics, Soledad O’Brien talks to Seen from the INside about philosophical values and the importance of visual storytelling. Born to immigrant parents, Soledad is one of six children and while she and all her siblings graduated from Harvard University, the key was always what her parents ingrained in her, “When you have an education, no one can take it away from you.” She went on to anchor CNN former morning show Starting Point for a decade and directed several award-winning documentaries including Black in America and Latino in America. Social justice and social inequality are “topics that I’ve covered for a long time because I’ve been fascinated with notoriously not covered topics and people,” Soledad said. She transitioned from journalist to CEO when she opened Starfish Media Group which creates and distributes media content. In partnership with Hearst Media, Soledad anchors a political show, Matter of Fact, which Soledad describes as, “The teaching hospital of political news – focusing on the context of political news.” Her foundation, PowHERful Foundation helps young women to and through women.
